Medications After Surgery

In order to provide the best care possible, you may be prescribed one or more of the following medications after your total joint replacement surgery.

COX-2 INHIBITORS (CELEBREX)

  • Proven significant role in reducing post-operative pain and inflammation
  • Safe with blood thinning medications
  • Safe to take up to the time of surgery
  • Non-addictive
  • Continued 2-6 weeks after surgery depending on pain and inflammation

NARCOTIC PAIN MEDICATIONS

  • Patients go home with Oxycodone and Tramadol post-surgery
  • FOR SHORT TERM USE ONLY
  • Continued chronic use creates dependency and addiction
  • Best medicines for chronic pain are anti-inflammatories such as NSAID’s or Cox-2 inhibitors
  • Usually not renewed on the weekend or after business hours but in the case of an emergency, our office is on call 24/7 through the weekend and holidays.

ANTICOAGULANTS

  • Please let us know if you or one of your family members has a history of blood clots in your legs or lungs.
  • If no history of blood clots, you will be prescribed Ecotrin for 30 days.
  • If you were on Coumadin before surgery, you will restart Coumadin after surgery (no aspirin needed)
  • If positive history of blood clots, different blood thinning options will be assessed by your doctor
Thank you, and as always, we are looking for ways to make your experience as easy, safe, and pain free as possible.
