Outpatient joint replacement surgery is a good option for almost all patients. There are minimal risks for patients who are active and motivated. Our program has shown that outpatient joint replacement is safe for patients to go home the same day, and the outcomes are no different than patients who stay in the hospital, based on numerous clinical studies.
Nearly all patients are candidates for SDD hip and knee replacement surgery.
Other factors to consider in order to participate in the SDD Program:
- You are not on any blood thinners due to a medical condition
- No cardiac or respiratory diseases for which monitoring is necessary
Advantages of SDD Total Joint Replacement (TJR):
- Familiar environment since you will be recovering at home and have all of the conveniences of home as well as having family and friends to help.
- You will be able to sleep in your own bed and not be awakened throughout the night by hospital staff.
- You will be in charge of your pain medications without having to wait for the nurse to bring them to you.
What to Expect Post-Surgery (Physical Therapy/Occupational Therapy):
After you are medically stable, your will receive your PT session. The nursing staff will assist with getting dressed in their clothes for going home, and you will eat prior to PT seeing you.
PT will come to your room to get you, then you will go to the gym to perform a session of supine and seated TE and the bike as well as trialing the stairs and car transfer.
Your will be seen for one session prior to discharge. The session will consist of the following:

If you are able to safely complete and tolerate PT session and it is deemed safe, you will be discharged the same day of surgery. If you do not demonstrate safety with session, or you are not medically stable, you may need to stay another day. You will then be scheduled for an additional PT session the following AM, then may discharge home if stable and safe.
You will be assessed to see if you require occupational therapy. If so, you will be seen by occupational therapy prior to discharge.
