What is “cryoanalgesia” treatment?

This treatment uses “cryoanalgesia” technology that uses freezing cold to disrupt the pain transmitting portion of nerves to produce immediate, long lasting “block” of those pain sensors.
This is only for the sensory nerves and leaves all muscle function intact.

How does the treatment work to relieve pain?

The treatment (Iovera System) uses a series of superficial treatments with small needles (a “smart” tip) that applies focused cold to a specific nerve, creating a small ice ball just under the skin. This immediately stops the nerve from sending pain signals.
The effect on the nerve is temporary and does not cause permanent damage.
The pain relief can last as long as 6 to 9 months and be repeated at 3 month intervals if needed.

Are you a candidate for the “cryoanalgesia” treatment?

This cold therapy treatment is already being used for knee pain associated with arthritis and can now be used pre-operatively before knee replacement surgery to assist with pain control post-operatively
For patients that are scheduled to undergo knee replacement surgery, we recommend that the treatment be schedule for 4 weeks prior to the actual surgery.

What happens during and after the treatment?

First, we will assess your pain, clean and mark the treatment area and then numb the area with topical spray and anesthetic injection.
During the treatment, you may feel pressure or tugging when the special “smart” tip is inserted into the treatment site.
The treatment should not be painful, but it is normal to experience pressure, a sensation of cold, warmth, and tingling during treatment.
These sensations can be an indication that the treatment is working. Afterwards, you can feel some numbness and/or bruising but will have completely normal muscle function.
Afterwards, you may experience some numbness and/or bruising around the knee but will have complete normal muscle function.

What are the costs for treatment?

These treatments are covered by most Medicare programs and is usually covered by other health insurance plans although there can occasionally be out of pocket expenses.
We will work with you to confirm if your insurance company requires pre-authorization.
The office visit is covered by your insurance company although there can be copays and/or deductible costs for the office visit.
